The Amatola Hiking Trail
Hogsback is the end point of this spectacular 106km, 6 day trail. It is known also known as the Waterfall Trail, due to the incredible amounts of waterfalls along the way. This epic, extremely challenging trail, once voted the best trail in South Africa by Getaway Magazine is one for the bucket list.
Amatola Trials is a sub section of our business that organises everything that you will need to experience all, or part of this amazing hiking trail.
Bookings are essential for your trail and to get a map and permit. You can do this directly through the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in King William’s Town. Contact Mrs Darki Ngxangane at ngxanganeD@daff.gov.za or visit their website: www.daff.gov.za. Alternatively we can arrange everything for you for an admin charge of R110 per hiker, this includes collection of map.
Accommodation for groups of up to 14, STRIDER’S HIKERS COTTAGE is an ideal accommodation option, having 3 twin, 1 double and 2 triple rooms, all en-suite, private and comfortable. The cottage has lovely views of the Amatola Mountains with a lekker braai area right outside. There is a basic self catering kitchen in Gandalf’s, the rondavel next to the cottage.
Transport. We can transport groups to the start of the trail at Maden Dam for the 6 day hike, or the overnight or forestry huts if you are hiking a shorter route. We charge R150 per person to get to the start of any of the days, with a minimum of 4 pax or R600. We set off at 6am in order to get a full days hiking in before it gets dark.
We can also collect groups from the airport on request.
Equipment. The Amatola Trail is not to be underestimated, any hiker must be prepared and have the necessary hiking equipment. An absolute bare minimum of Sturdy Hiking Boots, Warm Jacket, Waterproof Jacket, Lots of Socks and a Sleeping Bag is essential.
Multi Day Hiking Options. The main Amatola Trail starts at Maden Dam near King William’s Town and is 6 days and 5 nights. We also offer 2 and 3 day Amatola Trail hiking options for people with less time.
Safe Parking is available to all of our guests at no cost. For hikers not using our services we charge a R50 fee per vehicle.
Emergency Extractions. We regret that we do not offer medical assistance or any form of emergency service. We recommend that you take out adequate insurance for such an eventuality.
Group Discounts are available for groups with numbers 11 and over. Click here for more details.
